Doodle Scatter

This is the basic form of a procedural material I’m developing called Creature Scattershot

A key aspect of the body of work I’ve been developing has been vibrantly colored, sludgy textures that morph and twist across a surface. As I worked with these patterns, I wanted more and more to pull out the shapes (mainly amorphous creatures) that I faintly saw in them. So I created just that.

I created this material in Substance designer, but it would not have been possible without months of parallel work with Blender's procedural shading system. The material is procedurally generated based on a number of inputs, and tiles with itself seamlessly in all directions. The basic operation of the material is to take up to 8 drawings (they can be black&white or color) , scatter them randomly across the surface, as if someone dropped a deck of cards, and randomly assign colors based on some predetermined swatches.
